Olivia Rodrigo opened The Unraveled Tour with a costume change that happened before the crowd's eyes. At Hartford's PeoplesBank Arena on September 25, the singer took the stage in a crisp white collared mini dress with a pleated skirt to perform "The Cure." As artificial rain poured down and she repeated the lyric "I'm unraveled," the outer layer dissolved to expose a fire-red corseted bodysuit and miniskirt underneath—a direct visual translation of the tour's name.
The custom piece came from Hussein Chalayan, the Cyprus-born British designer known for garments that transform, move, and occasionally vanish entirely. The dress revisits a concept from his spring 2016 collection, when two models stood in white military-style paper outfits that dissolved under hidden showerheads to reveal palm-printed dresses with Swarovski crystals. That collection drew from Cuba's shifting political and cultural landscape, with Chalayan explaining at the time: "I liked the idea of a garment that could melt and reveal something else underneath." His team spent roughly six months developing the water-reactive material.
Chalayan has built his career on questioning what clothing can do beyond covering the body. His Central Saint Martins graduate collection featured garments buried underground to decay; later works incorporated mechanical components, lasers, LEDs, and crystal "pollen." His fall 2000 coffee table that converted into a wooden skirt and his remote control dress from spring 2000 remain touchstones of fashion-technology fusion.
Rodrigo's interpretation shifts the concept from political metaphor to pop spectacle. Where Chalayan used dissolution to signal transformation, she literalized becoming "unraveled" in real time for an arena audience.
The melting dress stands apart from Rodrigo's typical tour wardrobe, which stylist Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo have anchored in riot grrrl aesthetics and romantic vintage shapes. Other opening nights looks included a white ruffled babydoll by Dilara Findikoglu, a cropped graphic tee with hot-pink micro shorts, a flared leather mini from R&M Leathers, and a tank with vintage jeans and Vans.
The Hartford performances launched Rodrigo's new tour, suggesting more moments where fashion history and personal narrative intersect onstage.
