APICCAPS continues embedding sustainable footwear manufacturing into LCF's BA curriculum through direct industry collaboration.
The Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods and Alternatives Association (APICCAPS) has renewed its strategic partnership with London College of Fashion (LCF) for a second consecutive year. The ongoing initiative is woven directly into LCF's BA (Hons) Cordwainers Footwear program, linking design students with Portuguese footwear manufacturers to create sustainable, market-ready footwear concepts.
Students participate in a multi-stage project that pairs them with technical experts, component suppliers, and regional manufacturers across Portugal. This hands-on collaboration transforms conceptual designs into functional prototypes. The program includes dedicated industry workshops led by recognized designers such as Bianca Saunders, and emphasizes material traceability, waste reduction, and circular production techniques that align with Portugal's national Bioshoes4all sustainability framework.
For educational institutions, sustained industrial partnerships of this magnitude help close the distance between theoretical design training and the practical demands of supply chains. By opening doors to commercial manufacturing facilities and specialized technical knowledge, the collaboration strengthens curriculum relevance and prepares graduates with critical competencies in sustainable design, product development, and international trade operations.
