The singer stepped out in an elevated sweatsuit hours before the Costume Institute announced its celebration of everyday fashion.
Rihanna appears to have predicted the future of fashion without even trying. Hours before the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed its 2027 Met Gala theme, the singer and entrepreneur stepped out for dinner at Giorgio Baldi in an outfit that perfectly captured the upcoming exhibition's spirit.
The Costume Institute announced Tuesday morning that its spring 2027 show will be titled "extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday." Yet on Monday evening, Rihanna had already embodied the concept, transforming a heather gray sweatsuit into something undeniably glamorous. Her look paired a crewneck sweatshirt with cuffed drawstring sweatpants, elevated by a white shag coat draped over her shoulders.
The Details That Made It Work
Footwear kept the comfortable theme going: ultra-slim white ballet slippers featuring a high vamp and thin sole. Accessories provided the polish, with Rihanna layering on a gold collar necklace, diamond drop earrings, and tortoiseshell Phoebe Philo cat-eye sunglasses.
The timing feels particularly apt given what curators have planned. Andrew Bolton, who oversees the Costume Institute, found inspiration in Jun Takahashi's fall 2024 Undercover collection, which concluded with a gray sweatsuit decorated in gold tinsel. That same spirit of elevating the mundane will fill the museum's halls next May.
Rihanna's look walked the line between sleepwear and red-carpet readiness. As the original coverage noted, "leave it to Rihanna to make it Met steps-ready."
