ThruDark and Musto combine military expertise and maritime heritage for a technical offshore collection priced up to $2,200.
British actor Tom Hardy has built a reputation for looking at home in harsh conditions, so his affinity for rugged outdoor label ThruDark comes as little surprise. He recently sparked online buzz wearing the brand's Rōnin Tanto ski jacket—paired with a striking balaclava—in the music video for his rap debut. Hardy's connection to the company dates back to 2018, when he narrated its launch film.
Now ThruDark has joined forces with Musto, the established British sailing outfitter, on a collection built for demanding ocean passages—or operations requiring serious discretion.
ThruDark emerged in 2018 under former Royal Marines and Special Boat Service members Anthony "Staz" Stazicker and Louis Tinsley, who channeled 28 collective years of military service into technically rigorous apparel. Musto traces its origins to the 1960s, when founder Keith Musto—an Olympic silver medalist from the 1964 Games—began keeping sailors protected from the elements.
Their collaborative Nautikos range represents what Musto describes as its most sophisticated offshore offering to date. The line incorporates Gore-Tex Pro waterproofing and Dyneema reinforcement—a remarkably durable fiber found in climbing ropes, bullet-resistant armor, and yacht rigging. Additional features include detachable pockets that move between garments, shock-absorbing knee protection, and reflective elements for visibility in severe weather.
Standout items include a $2,200 waterproof jacket and coordinating $1,750 trousers. The collection also features a $325 fleece, a $105 cap, and a $105 T-shirt employing fabric derived from recycled coffee grounds.
Hardy's sailing ambitions remain unconfirmed, though his bond with ThruDark appears authentic. "We always love to see Tom wearing ThruDark," Stazicker told Esquire. "From our side, we're grateful he does. It's a genuine relationship built on mutual respect, and we never take it for granted."
Whether destined for actual ocean crossings or simply projecting readiness for severe coastal storms, the collaboration delivers substantial technical innovation.
